Dr. Stephen O. Andersen
Position: Director, Strategic Climate Projects
Agency: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Location: Washington, D.C.
Achievement: Played a key role in implementing the landmark Montreal Protocol which has put us on a path to restoring the ozone layer by phasing out 95 percent of the world’s ozone-depleting substances and is leading current federal efforts to combat climate change.

Achievement: Introducing cutting edge 3-D technology to improve medical care and rehabilitation, and helping restore quality of life for soldiers that have suffered traumatic battle injuries.
2008 Citizen Services Medal Recipient
Dr. Rajiv Jain
Position: Chief of Staff and MRSA Program Director
Agency: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Pittsburgh Healthcare System
Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Achievement: Developed and led an initiative that reduced a type of life-threatening, hospital-acquired infections by 60 percent and has been replicated at all 153 VA hospitals and other hospitals across America and parts of the world.
2008 Homeland Security Medal Recipient
Dr. Eddie Bernard
Position: Director, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory
Agency: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Location: Seattle, Washington
Achievement: Created a tsunami detection system that has dramatically increased warning times and decreased the risk of catastrophic loss of life.
2008 Justice and Law Enforcement Medal Recipient
Mark Pletcher
Position: Trial Attorney
Agency: U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, National Criminal Enforcement Section
Location: Washington, D.C.
Achievement: Leading efforts to stop bid-rigging, fraud and corruption involving U.S. officials and defense contractors in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan.

Achievement: Leads the U.S.-Afghan Women’s Council, a major public/private effort to enhance the economic, social and political status of Afghan women.
